Alexandra Battery is a historic fortification located near The Town of St. George’s, and was built in the mid-19th century to defend Bermuda against potential attacks.
The battery was originally armed with smoothbore cannon, but it was later upgraded to rifled artillery. During World War II, it was used as a coastal defence battery, and it was armed with two six-inch Mark VII guns, which could fire shells up to a distance of 15 miles. The battery was decommissioned in the 1950s, and it is now great spot for scenic views off the eastern shore of Bermuda.
The nearby Buildings Bay was used by the first settlers to build and launch the Patience and Deliverence ships to continue their journey to Jamestown, Virginia. The beach is now known for the colourful glass that can be found near the waterline and if you head towards the right you will be able to find a cave.
Today, Alexandra Battery is a popular tourist attraction and a reminder of Bermuda’s military history. The battery is also located near several other historic sites, including Fort St. Catherine and Gates Fort, which are also worth a visit.
